Asbestos being a generalized term describes several naturally occurring fibrous minerals that were used due to the wide range of helpful properties it offered. However, it was later discovered that asbestos caused several serious health hazards, like asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. These debilitating diseases often developed much later from the initial exposure, and due to the slow progression of symptoms, Canada’s construction industry continued to use asbestos up till the late 1970’s. The two widely used classes of asbestos products were friable and non-friable. Friable refer to materials that are easily crumbled and non-friable materials that are less prone to decomposition. When an asbestos contaminated material is disturbed, it can release these asbestos fibers and cause massive disruptions to the environment.
Mould is a microorganism that produces thousands of tiny particles called spores. Mould colonies are visually colorful, woolly growths that can be almost any color. Air movement or handling of mould can result in a release of spores into the air and can form colonies. Mould can be found almost anywhere indoors and outdoors and hide in dark moist environments. It can also form from flooding caused throughout the building. Stachybotrys chartarum is a particular concern due to being found in large mould colonies and can cause health problems. Fusarium, aspergillus, and pencillium are other types of toxic molds that can also be found in mould colonies.
Lead being a heavy metal is mined in mineral deposits in the earth’s crust and has been in industrial use for many years. It’s a pale silvery grey when freshly cut and progressively darkens when exposed to air. It’s low melting point, resistance to corrosion, and highly malleable properties are the reasoning behind its use. However, if lead is inhaled or ingested, it enters the bloodstream and spreads through a multitude of organs and continues to build up the further exposed to it. Build-up of lead in the body can result in acute or chronic poisoning depending on how often you’re exposed. Blood, kidney, gastrointestinal system, nervous system, reproductive system, and bones and teeth can all be severely affected by lead poisoning.
